Belonging

Summer of 19, You + Me, by Dan + Shay. One of the best songs from this summer. One of my all-time favorites for sure. My summer of 19 my best friends + me...was a good one. From every party, baking cookies sesh, 1 am in n out runs, and Shoreline country concerts, We lived our best teenage lives.
With my best friends, I always feel like I can be my true self, talk about my passions, interests, and stories. I feel comfortable and happy with them. We all help each other through our obstacles, injuries, and boy troubles. They are my two best friends and we get each other in a way that is easy. I got lucky with them.

But within every hangout and night out that we have, there is a particular moment, for me, where time freezes and a sense of aliveness comes over me. A feeling of utter mystical and magic. It gives me goosebumps every time. It is when we are driving down the road on our way to get ice cream or to watch sunset where we scream at the top of our lungs our absolute favorite country songs and all I care about is Ellie and Grace and me in our crazy teenage lives that we all belong to ourselves, each other, and the world.

space

As a lefty in a right-handed world, my use of space is awkward, to say the least. In restaurants, I need to sit on the left of someone so I do not elbow them when I am eating. I have come accustomed to always stepping ahead of people to make sure I get the “right” spot as a lefty. I am not complaining but rather I am pointing out that us lefties tend to think ahead of time to make sure our space is used well.  One of my biggest issues, was in school while growing up, was figuring out my space as a lefty in a right-handed desk. I started to develop back problems because I have to sit at odd angles to be able to write. Once, during my ACT test, I had to sit for 3 hours with a right-handed desk and I was very uncomfortable throughout the entire time. I did ask if I could use another desk as a way to make it more comfortable for me, but my proctor told me that the ACT had rules about the size of the desk that needed to be used. Food

As I walk into my dark hallway after a long day, the smell of tomato and basil come over me. I hear the radio humming RTE, an Irish radio show, as I walk into the aroma of spaghetti Bolognese in my kitchen. My mouth begins to water as I walk past the oven with the smell of garlic bread, baking just to the right crisp tan. My dad is standing by the cooker switching between stirring the spaghetti and mixing the bolognese to avoid it from burning. My mom is typing away on her laptop either replying to emails or shopping on amazon on the couch in the family room with my dog cuddled up, sleeping next to her. My brother is upstairs “doing homework”, but we all know he is on his phone. As I put my stuff down next to our counter, my dad asks me to set the table and to call my brother for dinner. We have a family room table where we usually eat dinner at the end of the long kitchen leading to my backyard.
